How to resize image to 20KB
- Choose your image above. Large phone photos and iPhone HEIC files are fine.
- Leave Max size at 20 KB. If the form gives a lower limit, such as 10 KB, enter it as Min size.
- If the form gives pixel or centimetre dimensions, open Dimensions & DPI and enter them, or tap a preset.
- Use Crop & rotate if the face or signature is small in the frame.
- Download the JPG and upload it.
What a 20KB image looks like
20 KB is about one two-hundredth of a normal phone photo. To fit, the image has to become small: usually between 200 and 400 pixels on the long side, depending on how much detail is in the picture. That is still plenty for a face on an admit card, which is printed only a few centimetres wide, and more than enough for a signature.
Results depend on the picture. A face against a plain wall fits at a larger size than the same face in front of trees or a patterned curtain, because plain areas compress very well. A signature on clean white paper fits at a much larger size than a photo, because most of it is empty white.
Which forms need a 20KB image
A 20 KB limit is most common for signatures. These are the 2026 official limits where 20 KB matters:
| Exam | Upload | Limit |
|---|---|---|
| IBPS PO, Clerk, RRB; SBI PO, Clerk | Signature | 10–20 KB, 140×60 px |
| IBPS and SBI | Photo | 20–50 KB (20 KB is the minimum) |
| SSC CGL, CHSL, GD, MTS | Signature | 10–20 KB, about 6×2 cm |
| UPSC Civil Services | Photo and signature | 20 KB is the minimum for both |
| CTET | Signature | 3–30 KB, 3.5×1.5 cm |
Notice the difference between a limit of "up to 20 KB" and a range that starts at 20 KB. For an IBPS photo, 20 KB is the floor, so a 19 KB photo is rejected; use the 50 KB resizer with Min 20 instead. For signatures, use the signature resizer, which also whitens the background and cuts empty margins.
Resize image to 20KB on Android or iPhone
You do not need an app. Open this page in your phone's browser and tap Choose photo. On Android you can pick from Gallery, Files or take a new photo with the camera. On iPhone you can pick from Photos or Files; HEIC photos are converted to JPG automatically. After resizing, tap Download JPG. On Android the file goes to the Downloads folder; on iPhone it goes to Files, and you can save it to Photos from the share sheet.
When you then open the application portal and tap the upload box, choose the file named like image-19kb.jpg from Downloads or Files. If your browser asks whether to keep the file, choose Keep.
Getting a clear image at 20KB
- Set the pixel size if the form gives one. A 200×230 photo at 20 KB has high JPEG quality. Without dimensions, the tool picks the largest size that fits, which is also fine for most forms.
- Crop tightly. Empty background around the face or signature uses bytes for nothing.
- Use a plain background and good light. Noise from a dark room is expensive to store and shows as blotches.
- Do not resize a resized image. Start from the original photo, not a screenshot or a WhatsApp copy.
- Check the preview. If the face looks blocky, the form probably allows more. Check whether the real limit is 50 KB.
Resize image to 20KB for bank and SSC signatures
Bank and SSC forms both use a 10–20 KB signature, but they describe the size differently. IBPS and SBI give pixels: 140×60. SSC gives centimetres: about 6.0 cm wide and 2.0 cm high (some SSC annexures say 4.0 cm). For IBPS and SBI, tap Signature 140×60 px. For SSC, choose centimetres under Dimensions & DPI, enter 6 and 2, and the tool converts them to pixels at 300 DPI (709×236 px) unless you type another DPI. GD 2026 asks for 300 DPI, which is exactly what the default writes into the file.
A signature on clean paper is mostly white, so at 140×60 it is often only 3–5 KB. That is below the 10 KB minimum, and the portal would reject it as too small. Set Min 10 and the tool adds padding inside the file to reach 10 KB; the signature itself does not change. On the signature resizer this happens together with background cleaning.
20KB, pixels and DPI
Three numbers describe an image for a form, and they are independent. The KB size is how much storage the file takes. The pixel size, such as 200×230, is how many dots the picture has. The DPI says how many of those dots should fit in an inch when printed. A 20 KB file can be 200×230 pixels at 200 DPI or 400×460 pixels at 300 DPI. When a form gives only a KB limit, ignore pixels and DPI. When it gives all three, set all three here, because some portals read the DPI written in the file.
Why some 20KB files are rejected
The most common reason is counting. A portal may treat 20 KB as 20,000 bytes or as 20,480 bytes, and it never tells you which. Files from this page are always under 20,000 bytes and the exact byte count is shown under After, so they pass both. Other reasons are a file below the minimum, the wrong dimensions, or a PNG renamed to .jpg. The tool always produces a real JPEG.
Need a different size?
Use the photo resizer in KB for any custom limit, the 50 KB resizer for bank exam photos, or the 100 KB compressor for declarations and documents.
Frequently asked questions
How can I resize an image to 20KB without losing quality?
Some detail is always lost at 20 KB, but you keep the most by also reducing the pixel size. If your form gives dimensions, such as 200×230, enter them. A small image at good quality looks far better than a large image at very low quality.
My photo is 4 MB. Can it really go down to 20 KB?
Yes. The tool lowers the resolution and JPEG quality step by step until the file is just under 20 KB, which typically means a few hundred pixels wide.
The form says "between 10 KB and 20 KB". What should I set?
Set Max size to 20 and Min size to 10. The tool aims as close to 20 KB as possible while staying under it, and never goes below 10 KB.
My phone says the file is 19.8 KB but the portal says it is too big. Why?
Your phone may count 1 KB as 1024 bytes while the portal counts 1000. 19.8 KB on the phone is 20,275 bytes, which is over 20,000. Files from this tool stay under 20,000 bytes, so they pass both checks.
Can I resize an image to 20KB on my phone?
Yes. Open this page in Chrome or Safari, tap Choose photo and pick from your gallery or camera. The file is processed on the phone and saved to your downloads.
What DPI should a 20KB image have?
Only what the form asks for. Most forms give no DPI. SSC GD 2026 asks for 300 DPI for the signature; type 300 under DPI and it is written into the file.
Can I resize a signature to 20KB here?
Yes, but the signature resizer is better for it, because it also turns the paper pure white and crops empty margins before resizing.
Will the result be a JPG?
Yes. JPG is the format almost every Indian application portal accepts, and it is the only common format that can hold a photo at 20 KB.
